Las Vegas Bans Slot Parlors

The attack on Dotty’s and similar slot parlors continued this week in unincorporated Clark County, just outside of the city limits of Las Vegas. Station Casinos, Golden Gaming and the Nevada Resorts Association pushed their fight against gaming establishments that do not offer dining or any other major business in addition to slots.

The Clark County Commission voted by a 6-1 margin to require taverns that operate slot machines to offer full service kitchens at least 16 hours a week and derive more than 50 percent of total revenues from segments other than gambling. Any establishment that fails to meet this criterion must spread no more than seven machines.

This move only affects slot parlors that serve alcohol by the drink. The new ordinance does not cover establishments within grocery stores, drug stores, or gas stations.

The Gaming Control Board recommended that Nazarian receive just a limited gaming license. The full Nevada Gaming Commission will take up the licensing request on December 18.

Casinos in Massachusetts are still two years away. That did not stop the state from announcing that a slot parlor opening in Plainville will offer a problem gambling feature that is a first for the industry. Players will have the option of deciding a loss limit before sitting down at the slots. Penn National will operate the slot parlor. It will be one of four casinos to open in Massachusetts in the coming years. State voters reaffirmed casinos in a November referendum.
