Online Blackjack

Blackjack is one of the most popular table games at the casino, and for good reason. The house edge on a game with positive rules is generally right around 0.5%, but can be as low as 0.2% for certain games when using basic strategy. This is much better than other card games, such as Let it Ride for example, where the house edge is well over 3%.

Not only does this make blackjack an extremely popular choice when visiting cities like Las Vegas or Atlantic City, but a top choice when playing at online casinos as well. Right next to poker, blackjack has been consistently one of the most played online casino games.

I myself am an avid blackjack player, so out of curiosity, decided to compile a list comparing all of the best options regarding online blackjack and pick a clear winner. Note that going into this, I did not know too much about playing blackjack online, so all of my findings will be revealed below in full depth. In this way, I hope that I can help you avoid getting ripped off and find the best online casinos to play at.

Best Online Casinos to Play Blackjack

There are a number of elements that were considered when ranking the top online casinos for playing blackjack. Since blackjack is the most popular of all table games, both online and in brick and mortar casinos, it is very easy to identify primary characteristics that make one casino better than the others. We considered the rules and odds offered in each of the blackjack offerings, which is arguably the most important element, but we did not stop there.

When you look past the surface elements of choosing an online casino for playing blackjack, you will consider the site’s reputation, your ability to get paid, software efficiency, and so on. It does not matter if you find an online casino with 3/2 blackjack payouts and with otherwise great rules if there is a risk that they will not pay you out when you win. Game payouts, odds, reputation and overall experience played a role in determining which online casinos were the top options for online blackjack for real money.

1.) Bovada Blackjack

Bovada is a popular online casino and sportsbook which only allows players who are based in the U.S. They have some of the best blackjack games online. The best game at Bovada is their standard single-deck blackjack table. It uses one deck, which is reshuffled after each hand. In this game, blackjack pays 3-2 and the dealer must hit soft 17’s. The only downsides to Bovada’s single-deck game is that surrender is not available and you are only allowed to split aces one time. They do offer insurance, which pays 2-1.

Bovada Single-Deck Rules:

– The game is played using one deck, which is reshuffled after each hand.
– Play one hand per round.
– Dealer hits on soft 17.
– Player Blackjack pays 3 to 2.
– Any other winning hand is paid 1 to 1.
– Insurance pays 2 to 1.
– No surrender.
– Split aces receive only one card.
– No re-splitting of aces.
– A split ace and a ten-value card is not a Blackjack.

Bovada Single Deck Blackjack

When playing single-deck blackjack at Bovada, there is only one table. Here, the bets range from $25 up to a $300 max bet and you can play one hand. The house edge here is about 0.38% overall when playing with basic strategy. The max bet of $300 is higher than most other reputable online casinos, which is great if you’re feeling lucky or just trying to get unstuck. If you are looking for a lower limit game, then they have a another standard blackjack table which has great rules as well.

Bovada Standard Blackjack

bovada-blackjackIf you are looking to play multiple hands, place higher bets or want more ideal rules, then Bovada’s standard blackjack or “21 blackjack” game is the place to play. It is a standard 6-deck “American” blackjack game paying 3-2 on a natural. This game has the same rules as single-deck blackjack, with a few distinct differences. Here, you can play up to three hands, split any first two cards up to three times and surrender.

Aside from this, the bets range from a $1 minimum to $500 maximum bet. Again this is among the highest (and lowest) limits available online. The house edge on this game is about 0.56% with basic strategy.

The combination of both superior single-deck and 6-deck games makes Bovada the best place to play blackjack online. Aside from the rules and odds available here, the reputation that Bovada has in the gaming community is bar-none. That being said they are still widely known amongst online gamblers for having quick cashouts, and I have not read of any issues. They utilize the same software as Bovada, and are closely related to them. Aside from blackjack, they have over 150 other table games, slots and video poker through their instant play, flash casino. Can I Play Blackjack Online in the U.S.A?

Contrary to the public perception of online gambling, it is possible to play safely online in the U.S. I’m no lawyer by any means and you should not construe this as legal advice… but from what I understand, based on federal law, it is not illegal for anyone in the U.S. to play casino games online. Some states do have stricter state-wide laws and regulations, however, so you should do your own homework before playing.

That being said, all of the sites on our list do currently accept U.S. players, and we have not heard about any issues regarding cashing out or depositing. If you decide to deposit, make sure you only choose a reputable company, such as those on our list. Some sites only accept U.S. players from certain states based on your IP address or other information. Below we have put together a comprehensive chart with casinos and the areas which they accept.

Types of Blackjack Games Offered Online

Before I get into the best places to play, I’m going to start off by going over the most popular types of blackjack games that are available online. The games offered through many online casino websites is similar to what you would find in any physical brick and mortar casino. The exception being a few one-off games that are strictly available online or in other countries such as Europe that you would otherwise not be able to play in the United States. The most popular types of online blackjack games include:

– Standard Blackjack (6-decks)
– Single-Deck Blackjack
– Double-Deck Blackjack
– European Blackjack
– Zappit Blackjack
– Perfect Pairs
– Face Up Blackjack
– Super 21
– Shut ‘Em Up Blackjack

For the sake of this article, I’ll be strictly outlining the best places to play your standard game of blackjack. I’ll be taking a deep look into each of the “normal” blackjack varieties such as single-deck, double-deck and multi-deck games. These types of games will have the best odds (lowest house edge) and are what most people, including myself, tend to play online. If there are any other varieties with better payouts, I’ll be sure to make note of them as well.

Differences Between Live and Online Blackjack

Online blackjack is similar to its live counterpart. The goal of the game is exactly the same. Players want to get closer to 21 than the dealer without going over, or hope that the dealer busts so that everybody wins. There are a few differences between live and online blackjack.

Online Blackjack Game Speed

The biggest difference between live and online blackjack is the speed of play. Live games spread about 70 hands an hour. Online blackjack games can deal 10 times that amount.

Players can play at their own pace at any speed at online casinos. There is no concern about slowing the game down for other players.

Lower Minimum Bets

All online casinos offer blackjack with a $1 minimum bet. There are even a few casino sites that spread games with a minimum of just $.10. This allows lower variance and longer play.

Better Blackjack Rules

There are two terrible blackjack rules in Las Vegas that can be avoided on the Internet. Many Las Vegas blackjack games pay 6-5 on a natural. You will never find this awful rule at online blackjack games. Blackjack always pays 3-2, except in crazy variants like Super 21.

Another great online blackjack rule is that the dealer typically stays on all 17’s. This often cuts the house edge in half.

There are two rules that are not common on the Internet. Surrender and resplit aces are rare. In many cases, all pairs may only be split one time.

Playing Multiple Hands

Have you ever been playing in a casino and wanted to play more than one hand at a full table? You never have to worry about that at casino sites. Most online casinos have tables that allow multiple hands to be played at the same time. This is a great way to lower variance.

No Counting

There is no way to count an online deck of cards. No matter the number of decks used at a blackjack game on the Internet, the game will reshuffle after each hand. This is not always a bad thing. The lowest house edge occurs on the first hand dealt from a shoe or deck. Players that are not expert counters will have better results from a game that reshuffles after each hand.

Blackjack Cash Back

Online casinos offer comps based on play. These comps are always paid in cash. The amount is based on the amount wagered and never the amount won or lost. Live casinos almost never pay cash on blackjack action. Live casino comps are usually issued in the form of free hotel rooms and meals.

Blackjack Bonuses

Online blackjack games often offer bonuses to new players. These bonuses can offset most or all of the house edge. Always read the terms and conditions to see if blackjack is a qualifying game.

No Dealers

Some players enjoy having a live dealer. There is a fee that comes with that preference. Dealers work on tips. Some are not exactly thrilled about their jobs. All players have been at a table where everybody was having fun, only to have a grumpy dealer push the lively one to break. You never have to worry about tipping or dealing with rude dealers when you play blackjack online. But if you’re one of those players that trusts a live dealer over a computer, there are some good live dealer blackjack games available at some casinos.

More Blackjack Variants at Online Casinos

Brick and mortar casinos have limited space for table games. This is never an issue with online ones. They can add as many games as they want. One of the advantages of this is that there are a variety of blackjack variants at these sites. For example, Spanish 21 is a dead game in Las Vegas. Many casino sites offer it. Most online casinos offer Blackjack Switch and Super Fun 21. There are some variants, like Zappit 21, that can only be found at online casinos.
