A sport believed to have originated in England, cricket is a game that is only played in a few parts of the world. So of course there’s plenty of action available for it.
A game that would be unfamiliar to most people, in a handful of ways cricket resembles baseball. The basic flow of how this sport is played is it is 2 teams of 11 on 11, and officiated by 2 umpires.
The goal is to score more runs than your opponent, and the game is 2 innings long.
Innings is the word always used when referring to it singularly or plural.
One side hits (the offense), the other side fields (the defense).
When the offense is out, the innings is complete, and they switch sides to play the second innings to see who wins the game.
The offense uses exactly 2 batsmen at all times during its time of offense as it cycles through their order.
One is at bat, and the other stands about 22 yards away. When the ball, which is delivered by the bowler is hit, they each run. This is where outs are recorded and/or runs are scored.
The defense has all of its 11 players in the field. Their job is to get you out and can do so in a number of ways which also resemble. Catching balls hit in the air, tagging a “base” with the ball before you reach it safely, etc.
Scoring runs usually requires full speed running, but if you hit the ball far enough, you can score 4 runs automatically on one swing, by hitting the ball so that it reaches the boundaries of the playing field. If you hit the ball completely beyond the boundaries, you get 6 runs. In neither case does anyone have to do any running. These 2 scoring scenarios are the equivalent of a home run.
There is a large selection to choose from when looking to place a wager. Many of which pertain to betting on specific types of performances from an individual player, or a match bet between 2 players. The bets range from very simple, to the very advanced and can be found online.
The most standard cricket bet is who the outright winner of the match will be. Preceding each match there will be a favorite and an underdog. The favorite is the team expected to win, so if you bet on them, your win will return less money than you had bet. If you take the underdog, because they are expected to lose, it will pay a sum larger than the amount you wagered. The line posted on what the payouts will be will have a minus sign for the favorite, and a plus sign for the underdog. Examples:
Team A -120
Team B +115
This means you have to bet $12 to win $10 on Team A. If you bet $12 and they won, your ticket would be worth $22. The $12 bet plus the $10 win. If you bet $10 on Team B and they win, your ticket will be worth $21.50. $10 for the bet, plus the $11.50 win.
If the match ends in a draw, meaning both teams have scored the same number of runs at the end of their innings, there is no winner or loser and your bet is returned to you.
A line can be set for the estimated combined number of runs that will be scored from both sides. This outcome has nothing to do with the winner. For example, if the line was set at 34, and you expect this game to be a high scoring affair, you may opt on taking the “over”, which means you are betting that a total of more than 34 runs will be scored. If you expect a low scoring game, you would take the “under.”
This award goes to the player who put out the overall best performance of anyone on the field. In other words, the most valuable player. It’s an interesting betting option to always have as most sports do not declare such a specific award after every game.

With 22 competitors on the field, naturally it will not be so easy to make the correct selection. Which is why if you do, the payout will be high since this is about guessing a longshot. You may want to make your selection based on what the playing surface is like, meaning if it is one that favors the offense, or the defense. When following sports closely, you come to learn which players excel at what.
The bowler is on defense, so when betting who the top team bowler will be, you are wagering which player will have taken the most wickets. This essentially means how many outs they recorded while bowling. This is also a longshot selection, so the payout will be high. If your bowler ties with another bowler for the most wickets taken, then a percentage will be paid out to you based on what the odds were.
This is about picking between 2 specific bowlers, and who will take the most wickets in an innings of a match.
Another longshot type, for this bet type you are picking from the offense, and trying to decide who will be the top run scorer. This includes how many runs score as a result of their turn at bat, as well as how many runs they themselves score. For this type of bet, since there is a batting order of 11 men, you should be looking to pick mostly from the top 6, or even the top 4 batsmen in the lineup. Your stronger offensive players are the ones you want to have the most opportunities to contribute, therefore they will be the ones getting the first cracks at doing so, making them the ones most likely to be the top team batsmen.
Same as with the bowler, you are choosing between 2 specifically named batsman, and betting on who will score more runs in an innings.
Betting on cricket during the game is something you may want to strongly consider. The pacing of the game starts out a little slow, and the weather conditions and surface of the playing field are significant determinants as to how the game plays out. That is why it may be advisable to wait to see how games are progressing in its early stages before making any bets.
These prop bets in cricket refer to selecting very specific outcomes that have nothing to do with who wins the game. For instance, you can bet on the coin toss of the game. The coin toss is obviously a pure 50/50, and only done to see who chooses to bat first.
Another variation of a prop, this is how many run outs will take place. This same prop can also be slated for how many players will be bowled, or stumped. They can pertain to all of the various ways you can get out, or all of the ways you can score runs. It also extends to how many runs you think a specific batsmen will score. These types may sound like they are just for fun, but there are going to be some that do contain some type of edge for the bettor to potentially exploit.
Since scoring four or six runs on one play are the most explosive ways to score runs, you can bet on the over/under as to how many of each of these will take place.
Cricket is often played in a tournament style, allowing you to bet on which team you think will make it to the finals.
The test match is considered the highest level of competition in cricket. It is spread over the course of 5 days, and you can bet on which day the match will conclude.
If not played in tournament style, cricket matches can be played over the course of series. For example, a best of 7 series means the first team to win 4 matches wins the series.
This is picking what the exact final score of a series would be. I.e. 4-1, 4-3, etc.
Out of the two batsmen that are presently in play, you are picking which of the two will be next to get out. This is an example of an in game wager.
A partnership is how many runs will be scored between 2 batsmen before one of them gets out. This bet means picking which of the 2 teams will score the most runs in each of their initial opportunity to score.
How many runs an individual batsman will score.
A wide is an illegally pitched ball that goes wide of the wicket. This is another over/under example of how many wides will take place during a match.
Known as the spread in American sports betting, betting the margin of victory has to do with taking either the favorite or the underdog. If the favorite is slated to win by 7.5 runs, then betting the favorite means you think they will win by at least 8 runs. Any other result besides this will result in a loss. This will pay out a greater figure than taking the favorite to win by any margin since it is a more difficult task.
If you take the underdog with the 7.5 runs, that means they can still lose the match, and by as many as 7 runs and you would still win your bet. Taking the underdog with the extra runs pays less than for them to win since this is an easier task.
