No matter whether you are from the United States or elsewhere around the world, it goes without saying that the state of Nevada is synonymous with gambling. Thanks to Las Vegas being the gambling hub of the world since the early 20th century, it is easy to understand why this thought process is so common. The grand, luxurious casinos that line The Strip are something everyone knows, but what most people do not realize is that Las Vegas, and Nevada as a whole, offer online gambling as well. Online casinos in Nevada make sense, but their route to becoming legal was not as straightforward as you might think.
To be fair, there is not much in the way of history when it comes to online gambling in Nevada. The real push for online casino gambling in the state first took flight shortly after 2010, however at the time it was nothing more than talk. Around 2013, that talk began turning into action. It all began with a proposed bill known as AB578, a bill that was eventually shot down by lobbyists. At the time of the proposed bill’s introduction, the biggest point of contention boiled down to a $500,000 fee that would allow an entity to operate internet gambling for a period of 2 years. This was a problem because many state representatives felt as though the massive $500,000 entry fee excluded smaller businesses and entrepreneurs from even having a chance in the prospective industry.
Others, however, loved the fee. The $500,000 mark, in the eyes of some, meant that only reputable businesses and entities could participate. Ultimately, AB578 died and never came to fruition.
Flash forward a bit and then came the introduction of AB466, a bill that centered on a work card system for casino workers; one that would be standardized. Upon the failure of AB578, lawmakers rushed to add an amendment to AB466, known as AB114. This amendment was passed and allowed for the existence of an intrastate online gambling industry. What’s more, the wording of the bill is such that it opens the door to the state teaming up with other states in order to offer online gambling that is not solely limited to the confines of Nevada.
Unlike New Jersey, for example, online gambling in Nevada is not quite as expansive. What we mean by this is that not all forms of gambling are available to be played. If you are moving to Nevada and hoping to play blackjack or roulette from your couch, you will be unpleasantly surprised to find that this is not legal. Instead, the current online gambling landscape of Nevada allows for two primary forms of gambling, sports betting and poker play.
With regard to the state’s online poker scene, it is great because some of the biggest names in the casino industry have their hand in it. Caesars, Wynn, and other large brick and mortar casinos have created online gambling portals. People love this because not only are the names behind the online sites trustworthy, they are able to offer a top-notch experience you might not have been able to attain from a company that might be completely new to the gambling industry.
Online horse and dog betting was legalized as well, however this was more in an effort to spur interest in what is seen as a dying industry.
What really gets people going about online casinos and online gambling in Nevada is the fact that there is a large number of online sportsbooks, offering sports betting on just about every type of event out there. Whether it be big names such as William Hill or MGM, or smaller names such as South Point and Station Casinos, the number of online sportsbooks is growing all the time.
That’s the thing about the Nevada online casino industry, it is still very much in its infancy. Though traditional casino games such as blackjack, roulette, and craps are not available online yet, there is little doubt in most peoples’ minds that this will change soon.
In order to participate in any sort of online gambling in the state of Nevada, you must be located within the state’s borders. Every site is mandated by law to track the players who are utilizing their services, so the second you step into a neighboring state your gambling session will be concluded.
