Newport Grand Slots is one of only two casinos located within the state of Rhode Island, which as of 2015 are both owned by the same parent company. Unlike its counterpart Twin River, Newport Grand does not offer any table games. It does however offer a variety of virtual table games which are electronic and do not feature a live dealer. The casino currently offers more than 1,000 electronic games from popular slots like Wheel of Fortune and Double Diamond to virtual games including roulette and blackjack.
Aside from these options, the casino features a popular multi-state progressive virtual machine called “Megahits.” Megahits has a three-state (Rhode Island/Delaware/West Virginia), 5-level progressive jackpot which starts at $25,000. In addition to these options, Newport does have a simulcast room which offers horse betting, though they do not host live races on-site. Here you can bet on and watch live races. Like the other Rhode Island casino, Twin River, you must be 18 years old to enter and play at Newport Grand.
The casino at Newport Grand Slots has a relatively small gaming floor, featuring just over 1,000 virtual gaming machines. This is somewhat small compared to other casinos within Rhode Island and nearby states like Connecticut. For example, the other RI casino; Twin River, has over 4,000 machines in addition to live table games. The casino offers both smoking and non-smoking areas, which will be convenient if you don’t smoke. All in all, the fact that it does not have any live table games or a hotel means that many casino-goers end up staying at nearby resorts like Foxwoods or Mohegan which are located in Connecticut.
Aside from slot machines, Newport also offers several virtual table games including blackjack and roulette. The blackjack machines at Newport feature Table Master Royal Match 21 machines which include 5 “tables” per station. This adds a slight social element to the game, which would otherwise be much like any other slot machine. Though in my opinion this is not as exciting as playing live games, it is a step up from other blackjack machines like those offered by IGT.
In addition to traditional gambling in the form of slots and virtual machines, Newport Grand also offers a large simulcast room. This enables you to bet on horses and greyhound races in other parts of the country and catch the action live. The room includes an abundance of televisions and seats which will enable you to hang out and place bets. The casino does not offer on-site racing.
The Newport Grand casino was owned and operated by Newport Entertainment and Leisure for several years, but was recently sold to Twin River Management Group in mid-2015. As you probably guessed, this is the same company that owns and operates the popular Twin River Casino in Lincoln, RI. In my opinion this means that there is a good possibility that at some point they will be approved to offer table games (though as of now this is not the case). The same year that Twin River was approved to offer table games, a similar referendum was denied by local voters in Newport.
Compared to other casinos in Rhode Island and other parts of American, Newport offers very little in the way of food. It does offer one highly rated eatery called the Grand Grille Restaurant. Though variety is lacked in the casino’s offering of dining options, the Grand Grille does offer a fairly comprehensive menu. Their menu includes nightly specials which range from fish and chips to past night.
Much like other casinos in Rhode Island, Newport Grand does not offer an on-site hotel or resort. This means you will never get comped rooms here, and will have to find hotel options in the surrounding areas. They do offer hotel packages through a select number of partners where you may be able to find a deal. This is somewhat of a turn off, considering many resort casinos will not only comp your room, but also other amenities such as room service. One unique aspect of this, however, is that you can redeem points from their player program and convert them into hotel gift certificate.
