The Taormina Hotel & Casino is located in Barrio Amon, a historical neighborhood of San Jose, Costa Rica. Full of fascinating 19th and 20th century architecture, this is one of the oldest neighborhoods that you will find in San Jose and is a great place to visit if you want to learn about the history of Costa Rica.
Situated just 7 km from Tobías Bolaños International Airport, you can get to the casino in about 10-15 minutes by car, taxi or shuttle bus. These are your main options, as going by train will not be easy. The hotel can help you to arrange car rental, but you should have no problem finding one at the airport as well.
When you are not playing at the casino or relaxing in your hotel room at the Taormina Hotel & Casino, you might want to think about checking out some of the local tourist attractions that are right nearby. These include a number of museums that are all located less than a kilometer away from the hotel such as the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum, Jade Museum and the Costa Rica National Museum.
If you are planning to enjoy your time at this casino, it is worth noting that you will have to be at least 18 years old and will also be required to dress smart casual at the minimum. They are not overly strict with this but do not expect to be let in without a shirt and wearing sandals.
The casino floor at Taormina Hotel is fairly small at around 8,000 square feet in size but you still have pretty much everything you would need from a casino. You will find a handful of table games and a few rows of modern slot machines as well as a dedicated poker room that hosts cash games regularly.
As the Taormina Hotel & Casino underwent a change of ownership and a full renovation in 2015, you can expect everything to look clean and modern. As for the atmosphere here, this will generally be light-hearted as most of the players will be tourists that are on vacation looking to have a good time.
This casino opens its doors at 11 AM and closes right around 4 AM; but different areas of the casino will open at varying times. From 11 AM you will be able to play the slot machines while at 2 PM you will be able to play in the poker room. As for the table games, these do not start running until 7 PM.
There is a handful of table games in the casino, with blackjack being the game most prominent. You can expect to see some fairly low limits for blackjack – but this is a common theme throughout the casino.
As for the other games that can be enjoyed here, there is rummy, Three Card Poker and roulette. Roulette, in particular, is a table that almost guarantees a good atmosphere but the other tables can also offer up plenty of fun and excitement too.
When playing a the tables you do not have to worry too much about changing up your US dollars for the local currency as you will be able to use USD to exchange casino chips as well.
If you enjoy playing slot machines when at the casino, you will find a decent selection of these on offer at Taormina too. Some of the slots are connected to an in-house progressive jackpot which could land you a decent payout, while the rest will be a mixture of multi-line video slots and fruit-themed classic slot machines.
Each of these machines are very modern and will offer a range of limits but you will not find anything too high in that regard here. The comfortable rooms on offer all come equipped with air-conditioning, free internet, flat screen TV and a refrigerator and amenities including a bar, restaurant, room service, free breakfasts and of course, the casino. There is no pool at the Taormina Hotel & Casino currently, however.
Il Gatopardo is the restaurant at the Taormina Hotel & Casino and this serves up a wonderful selection of Italian cuisine. This restaurant can be used for breakfast, lunch and dinner and room service and is open from 7am until late.
Right next door to the casino you will also find a sports lounge bar that is usually well-populated during the evenings. Here you can enjoy a few cold drinks, watch some sports and nibble on some snacks. You will also have little trouble finding some other great restaurants in the area should you decide to eat out.
