The Hotel & Casino Del Rey is located right in the heart of San Jose, Costa Rica. While the casino floor is nice, the hotel is one of the seedier properties to stay at in the city. Famous for its nightlife scene (which seems to be never-ending) Hotel & Casino Del Rey might be perfect for some, but for others it can prove to be a bit much.
The Hotel & Casino Del Rey is about as centrally located as you will find. For casino goers and tourists, there couldn’t be a better location. The Gold Museum, Plaza de la Cultura, National Cathedral and Mercado Central are just a few of the notable attractions nearby. Plus, excellent city parks, shopping, and dining are scattered throughout the downtown area of San Jose.
The local airport – Juan Santamaria International – is only 20 minutes from Hotel & Casino Del Rey, and many guests like to rent cars from the airport to give themselves a bit of freedom within the city. As an added bonus, the hotel offers free parking to its guests. There is also the option of using the local bus system and taxis are available in abundance.
As the casino targets those looking to party, it does not strictly enforce a dress code policy, making it one of the most relaxed places to gamble in the country.
Despite all the other entertainment that Hotel Del Rey offers, the casino takes the lion’s share of the attention. It is rated as one of San Jose’s best casino floors, so the casino at Hotel Del Rey is both professional and comfortable. The casino games at Hotel Del Rey are open 24/7 without fail. Whether you are just trying out a few hands of blackjack for the first time or you have been gambling for years, you’ll be able to find a table or slot machine to play here.
Some of the most popular table games at the casino are Rummy, Tute, and Canasta. Also, for the serious poker players, there is a dedicated poker room. Yet another draw to this casino for many of its patrons is the relaxed atmosphere and the fact that there is no dress code. There is also a cashier on site that provides an exchange service on the spot, but most of the games will take the local currency as well as US Dollars.
There are a total of five tables which are dedicated to Tute, Rummy and Canasta, a roulette table and a poker room. Rummy, Tute, and Canasta each occupy their own table and provide visitors with a perfect opportunity to experience gambling the way the Spanish intended it.
The Rummy table is standard, but unless you have traveled through countries with a heavy Latin influence the other two games may not be as familiar. Canasta, for example, is the Spanish equivalent of Rummy. Similarly, Tute is a trick-taking card game that was the most popular in Spain during the 19th century.
Whichever table you choose to play at, you are sure to feel the heritage and culture that is tied to Hotel & Casino Del Rey’s table games.
Poker has its own room dubbed the Costa Rica Hold’em Club. There isn’t much to say about a poker room other than that is where all the serious players spend their time. The room has two dedicated Hold’em tables running around the clock with buy-ins of $500 and $1,000.
Players can find just over 70 slot machines which line the perimeter of the casino floor. On the main gaming floor among the slots, players will also find some classic video poker machines. There is a nice, but small, selection of video poker with titles like Jack or Better, Deuces Wild and several more.
As one might expect from a hotel and casino that is known for its world-class party atmosphere, Hotel Del Rey has several bars, a good variety of room types and sizes, a few nice perks (like free parking), all the necessary amenities, internet access and room service, which is available any time of the day or night. The parking here has its own security team who take their guests’ safety very seriously.
One thing to remember, however, is that Hotel & Casino Del Rey is not a place for families looking to relax or anyone traveling with kids. The hotel proudly operates as an “Adults Only” playground for guests from around the globe.
For those looking to stay at Hotel & Casino Del Rey, there are several options for rooms. Amenities include free WIFI connection, coffee, tea and food around the clock, massage therapy, on-site medical services and an internet cafe.
For day trips to some of the more touristic areas or to the beach from the hotel, guests can also utilize Hotel & Casino Del Rey’s on-site travel desk to arrange any and all travel plans within Costa Rica.
The Del Mar Restaurant, located within the main hotel building, serves up a delicious international menu of seafood and steaks, as well as a solid selection of beers and wines. The dress code for dining is casual and the prices are fairly low compared to similar dishes found elsewhere throughout the city.
The bars are where Hotel & Casino Del Rey really shines as there are ten of them to choose from. The Blue Marlin Bar is open all day and night, serving up a wide variety of drinks and cocktails. The Blue Marlin also doubles as a kind sports bar during large sporting events and it is not uncommon to find people running sportsbooks during the biggest games.
The Lobby Bar is also a great place to spend a little time. When you want to drink some local coffee and have a relaxed start to your day, you will likely find yourself in the Lobby Bar.
The Key Largo Bar and the Little Marlin Bar are both located across the street from Hotel & Casino Del Rey and they both have a very different approach to entertainment. Key Largo is where you will find the nightclub, several bar areas playing different types of music and live Latin music on a regular basis. Little Marlin, on the other hand, is where you can go to relax and watch some sports on one of the many TVs.
