2018 Auto Club 400 (California) Odds

Can anyone stop Kevin Harvick? This is the big question heading into this weekend’s Auto Club 400 at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California. Harvick has now won three consecutive races, all of which have been held on the Western side of the United States. The California native seems to love racing close to home, and no track is closer to his Temecula hometown than Auto Club Speedway. He is far and away the favorite heading into this race, however he is not the only person oddsmakers are keeping their eyes on.

While Harvick is being listed as the favorite, other drivers are right up there with him, including fellow California native Kyle Larson. Though he is only 25 years of age, Larson is the defending champion at Auto Club Speedway and will be looking to defend his throne. There are plenty of other drivers who are being given good chances of winning, but the eyes will be on those local drivers that seem to have a leg-up on the competition when it comes to West Coast tracks.

The Favorites

Kevin Harvick (+300)

As was mentioned above, Harvick will enter this Sunday’s race on the back of three consecutive victories; a feat rarely achieved in NASCAR. At 42 years old, Harvick is one of the most experienced racers as well as the oldest. This experience has been used to his advantage through the past month or so, and there is little reason to think that his fortunes would be any worse at Auto Club Speedway.

Winning four races in a row is something very few people have done in the past, but Harvick seems primed to do exactly that. Barring any mechanical issues or wrecks, I would not be surprised to see Harvick win the race. If nothing else, I think Harvick is a safe bet to finish in the top 5 of Sunday’s race.

Kyle Busch (+425)

Not quite as impressive as Harvick’s last few weeks, but impressive nonetheless, is the fact that Kyle Busch has finished runner-up in the last 2 races. Busch, a Las Vegas native, has put in solid performances in every race this year and will consider himself unlucky to have not won in either of the past 2 races. There is a growing feeling that Busch will be able to overcome Harvick this weekend and finally get himself into Victory Lane for the first time in 2018.

WCI Dark Horses

Martin Truex Jr. (+450)

In terms of odds, Martin Truex Jr. is, technically, up there with the favorites. We consider him a dark horse in the Auto Club 400 because he has yet to really get things going. The defending NASCAR champion has been on the cusp of victory for a month now, but has been unable to overcome some of the drivers mentioned above. Still, Truex Jr. is the defending points champion and will always be given a good chance of getting into Victory Lane for the first time in 2018. Truex finished fourth in last year’s race, so it is clear to see that he does perform well at this track.

Denny Hamlin (+1500)

Denny Hamlin, like Truex Jr., has been just inches away from a victory through three of four races this year. He began the year with a 3rd place finish at Daytona, and followed that up with two 4th place finishes at Atlanta and last week in Phoenix. In speaking with the media, Hamlin seems confident in him and his team’s ability to get into Victory Lane. He said, “We’re running well, we’re leading laps and we’re doing some things that are good. We just need a little bit.” It will be intriguing to see if they can get that “little bit” this week and win the race.
